This april we are excited to host a 3 day landscape photography course with acclaimed photographer Joe Cornish.

This fantastic opportunity to meet and learn from Joe is only available to a few and is a must for any landscape photographer wishing to improve their skills. The workshop is first and foremost a field based workshop, designed to help participants to enjoy and improve their landscape photography via a hands-on practical experience.

We recently heard from south devon photographer Phil Hemsley who joined us for the 2 day landscape photography course with Joe last year;

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Joe Cornish workshop you ran in the summer of 2011 and feel that this panorama (below) encapsulates the essence of all that I learnt from Joe on the course and my continued experimentation since. Joe had told me it was sometimes worth waiting for the afterglow of a sunset for it’s unique lighting potential, how glad I was that I waited for the defining moment for this panorama - glad I listened to that pearl of wisdom as I saw a handful of disappointed looking photographers walk off the beach just as the sun set behind a thin line of cloud above the horizon….if only they had waited a while longer!”

FORECAST captures a broad range of atmospheric seascapes from a single position at West Wittering beach on the West Sussex coast. Shot on medium format film, in different weather conditions, at varying times of day, in all seasons, over the period of a year, this work uses the horizon as a focal point to link the changing hues and textures of sea and sky.  In doing this, the series explores the eclectic characteristics of the horizon: unchanging, immutable, inscrutable, whatever the weather.  These images seek to interrogate the progress of time: the moment past, the present captured, the future forecast.

The photographs are produced as giclee prints on watercolour paper, limited to editions of 6. to view further images from the exhibition visit the gallery page of the bangwallop website.

matt velarde started his career in marketing, including advertising and pr, but never lost sight of his true calling: photography he went back to school and obtained an honours degree in documentary and  fine art photography from Liverpool john moores university; this gave him the confidence and the spur to follow his true vocation. even before graduation matt’s work was already gaining interest in the manchester art community and exhibiting his work in contemporary art galleries in the north west of England primarily focusing on landscape images these days, matt is happy to blur the line between  the abstract, graphic and the figurative in what he sees in the places and spaces in the outdoor world around him. whilst travelling in the uk and abroad matt primarily lives and works in the north west of england and devon, the latter of which he draws great inspiration from; the coastal waters and their skies, the beaches and bays and the landscapes that spill down into them.

friday 5th - saturday 6th august 2011

Get yourself down to bangwallop in Salcombe for their two day photography event on Friday the 5^th and Saturday the 6^th August.

There will be an opportunity for you to participate in many fun and free events, and the opportunity to meet some of the greats in the industry who will be at the gallery over the two day event, including Gered Mankowitz, Charlie Waite, Kos Evans, and Matt Velarde.

The brilliant and leading landscape photographer Charlie Waite will be at the gallery on Friday, one to one critique sessions (book now for last few places!) will be taking place during the afternoon, and Charlie will be giving a talk in the studio beginning at 7.30pm (places are limited so booking is advisable £10 a ticket, call the studio to reserve a seat!)

A free children’s pinhole photography class: kids can make their own camera, take the image and print, in the old fashioned way in the darkroom, a great insight into the miracle of photography.

The Caravan Gallery,

famous for their wry sardonic images of British life, will be at bangwallop setting the challenge for the competition “Sunny Salcombe”, The winning image of the day earns the prize of a place on one of bangwallop’s many workshops.

Gered Mankowitz

will be giving a talk on saturday afternoon - his incredible career has included photographing Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and Elton John to name just a few.

Due to a very busy start to this year, our ‘bangwallop photo of the month’ feature has not run recently, however it will now run on the first of every month here on the news page!

photo of the month is our favourite image from the past month and can be chosen from any work that we are exhibiting or that has been submitted to us, it can also be taken from one of our own shoots here at the studio.

this month we were approached to do a full days fashion shoot by young fashion designer, Bryony Ross. shooting both in the studio and on location, each outfit was shot in a different style to mirror the design of the outfit, resulting in some fantastic shots and a very pleasing portfolio of bryony’s work.

In time for the bank holiday weekend at the end of May we will be exhibiting a selection of hand made prints by American photographer Michael Kahn. His powerful images represent his two life long passions: the ocean and classic sailing yachts.

Michael Kahns’s work has been published in several books, including ‘The Spirit of the Sea’ and his work is represented by galleries around the world.

Michael Kahn hand prints his images, using a process he has developed over years of researching and working in the darkroom. His images are warm toned, black and white and demonstrate his expertise as a fine printer.

Last weekend bangwallop ran a two day, wildlife photography course with Ross Hoddinott. Despite difficult weather conditions, the course was a great success and everyone achieved some fantastic and varied images.

The course began on saturday, starting with photographing around Haytor on Dartmoor. Thick mist in the morning meant that big views were unavailable, but instead there was plenty of opportunity for close-up shots of bluebells. After lunch we headed to a local farm to meet up with a falconer. This great location gave everyone a chance to get some incredible shots of a barn owl and kestral in what looked like completely natural settings.

We had time for one more location on Dartmoor, to get some atmospheric views, before rain forced us back to salcombe and into the pub for dinner.

We opted for an early night as the weather had still not improved, but looked better for the morning.

5 am at snapes point overlooking salcombe, and with a strong wind, the clouds soon cleared to reveal blue sky and warm sunshine. not quite classic sunrise conditions, but a great view over the estuary.

We returned to bangwallop for breakfast, and a chance to download images and have a look through the shots from saturday, before heading out again - this time across the water to East Portlemouth. the cliff path up through the woods behind Mill Bay gave Ross a good opportunity to demonstrate some of the techniques he uses for macro photography.

The course finished at the end of the afternoon with a slideshow and critique of everyones shots from the weekend. The results were excellent and everyone came away with a great mix of landscape, wildlife and macro images.
